About these qualifications

The level 3 award, certificate and extended diploma in health and social care have been designed to enable learners to access higher education and will also support progression into the workplace.

These qualifications have been designed and written by a team of subject matter experts, and we have involved employers and higher education institutions in the review of the content.

Qualification structure

Award Learners must achieve 3 mandatory units (graded A*-D, set by us, marked by the centre)
Certificate Learners must achieve:
•9 core mandatory units (graded A*-D; set by us, marked by the centre)
•one extended assessment covering the core mandatory units (externally set, externally marked)
•placement in a real work environment (75 hours)
Extended dipoma Learners must achieve:
•9 core mandatory units (graded A*-D; set by us, marked by the centre)
•one extended assessment covering the core mandatory units (externally set, externally marked)
•5 diploma mandatory units (graded A*-D; set by us, marked by the centre)

•one extended assessment covering the diploma mandatory units (externally set, externally marked)
•3 optional units from optional group 1 and 1 optional unit from optional group 2 (graded A*-D, set by us, marked by the centre)
•placement in a real work environment 175 hours

Assessment

Award: Portfolio of evidence
Certificate: Portfolio of evidence, one extended assessment.
Extended diploma: Portfolio of evidence; two extended assessments (one covering the ‘core mandatory’ units and one covering the ‘diploma mandatory’ units).

Extended Assessment: Within each qualification there is a maximum of two opportunities for learners to attempt each of the external assessments in order to achieve a pass grade or to improve a grade

A learner who intends to submit the extended assessment for a second attempt will be required to make a new submission of the alternative assessment task

Placement requirements

Learners will be required to attend placement in a real work environment to support their learning. The minimum required number of placement hours is:

Certificate: 75 hours
Extended diploma: 175 hours (includes the 75 hours completed during the certificate)

Progression opportunities

Award: learners will be able to progress to the level 3 certificate in health and social care and then to the level 3 extended diploma in health and social Care.

Certificate: learners will be able to progress to the level 3 extended diploma in health and social
care. The certificate supports learners’ access to higher education and progression into a wide range of job roles within the health and social care sector. The certificate also supports progression to further learning in related subject areas at level 4 and above.

Extended diploma: achievement of the extended diploma supports learners’ access to Higher Education and progression into a wide range of job roles within the health and social care sector.

These qualifications do not provide a licence to practise, but may support progression into a wide range of job roles in the health and social care sector, including:

care support workers in adult residential settings
healthcare assistants in community,primary care and acute health environments
care support workers in domiciliary services, supported living or day services
community-based support workers
